The Bare Tree – helping homeowners with their outdoor environments

My mother once said to me, “When one sees the tree in leaf, one thinks the beauty of the tree is in its leaves, and then one sees the bare tree.”

Samuel Menashe

In the depth of Winter, it can seem that our outdoor spaces are still, locked in place by the cold. The reality, of course, is quite different. Nature is always active, even if quietly.

Taking some time to be still in our garden in Winter can reveal many things. It shows us the framework of the space, and so may also show us where we need to improve that framework. Perhaps trees or shrubs are in need of corrective pruning to restore their form, or eliminate structural problems. Perhaps we need to start planning further foundational planting to give design coherence that will be satisfying all year. Did the plantings perform well last year, or did they show us that the soil is in need of restoration? And perhaps we want to revisit our hopes for the garden: is it welcoming, interesting, satisfying? Does it give something to all who spend time there, whether that be a peaceful break for humans, forage for pollinators, or maybe shelter for birds?

Every outdoor space is unique, as are its needs. Once we determine the needs of the garden, it’s time to determine how to accomplish those needs. Are the tasks within the scope of what we are comfortable undertaking ourselves, or would a little more input be helpful?

At Golden Mean Landscapes it is our pleasure and privilege to help homeowners with their outdoor environments. From garden planning and cleanups, to planting and maintenance and hardscape additions, we are here to help. Reach out. We give your spaces the care you expect.
