Sometimes less is more; you don’t always have to start from scratch. The owners had outgrown the existing playbarn and sand box and wanted to reinvent their backyard to explore new passions. They had an existing walkout deck they wanted to incorporate as well as existing poured concrete walkways with finished side access. The challenges were many, including a soggy rear yard in the spring due to poor drainage and clay-based soils. One owners is an avid gardener, and the other has a love of cooking.
The final product has dedicated zones with a cooking area and a covered metal pergola with adjustable shade louvers. Coupled with privacy planting, it makes for a more intimate setting. The front of the planting beds having room for annuals and the tiered planting approach for privacy were just some of the solutions provided. In the end, a water feature and landscape lighting really completed the backyard. One that initially felt open and vacant is now a place where friends and family want to spend time.
